    Protein Summary

    The eutQ gene from Salmonella typhimurium lt2 (NP_461403) encodes a 229 residue ethanolamine utilization protein (PF06249, COG1917) whose C-terminal fragment 98-229 adopts a double-stranded beta-helix fold, inside the RmlC-like cupins superfamily, EutQ-like family. The eutQ gene forms part of the ethanolamine utilization operon, members of which have been implicated in the formation of a protein-based organelle (microcompartment) in E. coli [Ref] leading to sequestration of ethanolamine metabolism [Ref]. In Salmonella, 5 out of the 17 eut operon genes are apparent homologues of proteins that serve (in other organisms) as shell proteins of the carboxysome [Ref] suggesting CO2 fixation may be a feature of ethanolamine catabolism in Salmonella. STRING finds a strong hit (0.984) based on neighborhood, co-ocurrence and coexpression with eutT, a putative cobalamin adenosyltransferase (YP_149724).


    Strong structural similarity (FFAS scr=-30; Dali Z-scr=13; FATCAT P-val=2e-8) is detected with 1vj2, a manganese containing cupin [Ref], 3bcw and 1o5u([Ref]).


    To do: does eutQ have a cobalamin site? any other way to identify its function? look at similarity between eut operon and other bacterial microcompartment-forming operons - is there a big picture? (e.g. compare/contrast carboxysome with eut microcompartment)
