    Protein Summary

The TM0212 gene from Thermotoga maritima codes for the glycine cleavage system H protein  (NP_228027; EC classification: EC:; ortholog gene cluster COG0509).

SCOP classifies 2ka7 inside the all beta class, single hybrid motif superfamily, biotinyl/lipoyl-carrier protein family. 2ka7 is the solution structure PDB code for the 1.65A resolution crystal structure deposited as (1ZKO). Using 2ka7/1zko as query, Dali top hits with Z-scr=23 are with glycine cleavage system H proteins 1onl, 3a7l and 1hpc.

The protein belongs to the biotinyl-lipoyl domain superfamily PF01597.  This is a family of glycine cleavage H-proteins, part of the glycine cleavage multienzyme complex (GCV) found in bacteria and the mitochondria of eukaryotes. GCV catalyses the catabolism of glycine in eukaryotes. A lipoyl group is attached to a completely conserved lysine residue (Lys 60 in 2ka7). The H protein shuttles the methylamine group of glycine from the P protein to the T protein [Ref].
