    Protein Summary

    The gene TM1436 from Thermotoga maritima encodes glycerol uptake antiterminator protein regulon (mRNA binding) PF04309  COG1954.  A search for structurally similar proteins with DALI provides hits with the antiterminator protein regulon 3kts (Z=24), and the orotidine monophospahate decarboxylase 1los (Z=15).

    One of the closest homologues is B. subtilis glpP [Ref][Ref].  The main function of the protein is to enhance the transcription in the presence of glycerol 3-phosphate.  Antitermination of transcription mediated by proteins interacting with mRNA sequences is described for nine operons/regulons. Eight of the systems are catabolic, while the ninth, the Klebsiella pneumoniae nas regulon, is involved in the assimilation of nitrate and nitrite. The antiterminator protein of the B. subtilis glpP regulon has been found not only to cause antitermination but also to stabilize the resultant mRNA and to mediate glucose repression [Ref].  In B. subtilis,  glpP regulates the expression of glpFK, glpD and glpTQ genes.
