    Pfam family PFAM:PF01910 {Domain of unknown function DUF77} with 326 members in NR database and additional 106 members in the metagenomic datasets is represented in Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukaryota.

    The first structural representative solved (PDB Id: TOPSAN:1lxj) was subject to FATCAT structural similarity search that indicated similarity to SCOP (v. 1.73) domain SCOP:d1j27a_  classified as ferredoxin-like fold, MTH1187-like (super)family. However, no sequence similarity to this fold has been detected. A DALI search with 1lxj provides hits with other DUF77 structures (Z=14-12) like 2eky, 1lxn, 2epi, 1vk8, 2ibo. 

    Experimental results from the original paper suggest that this family may have a role in yeast cell-wall biogenesis [Ref]. Gene inactivation of the DUF77 yeast homolog makes yeast hypersensitive to agents disrupting cell-wall polymers, a result that was interpreted as DUF77 having a role in cell wall formation [Ref]. Based on the conservation of residues involved in oligomerization and the presence of ordered sulfates in the crystal structure, another proposed functional role involved DUF77 acting as a protein-protein interaction module [Ref]. The Thermotoga maritima homolog (TM0486, 1vk8) is upregulated during biofilm formation with the authors suggesting a role in sulfate/sulfonate uptake [Ref].
